To have so many things during the game not go your way, or just not able to come up with the play, it was just so frustrating for so much of the game, but then for so many things to work out in the fourth quarter as they did to give us an opportunity to make the plays that we did in the fourth quarter to win the game, it was really special. When you go to an environment like that, a 1. And to go in there and to be able to fight your way through it in the end and in that kind of fashion was really special and took a lot of character by our players, and again I really applaud my assistant coaches, I thought did a great job of keeping everybody up, staying positive, keep looking for the right plays and the right defenses and I thought they did a great job with it."The story of the game, I thought, was really the biggest part was the defense being able to keep us in it for so long. If they give up another field goal, if they give up a third- and- one, if they don't have the goal- line stand on the first drive of the game where they kicked a field goal, it's a totally different outcome. I thought the D- line was incredibly disruptive, got the ball out three times and couldn't get any of them, just couldn't catch a break that way, but really made some plays when we had to to back them up. Lewis left the game and the Tennessee Defense held on. Tennessee won its first consensus National Championship.Got them in a lot of negative yardage plays, a lot of pressure to the quarterback, sacks, those kind of things. I thought the coverage was excellent and really the play to hold them to, I don't know, they had 1. I think in the last 2. And then offensively, we had some things come together in the fourth quarter. I thought Baker's ability to scramble and come up with some plays there on third downs, we finished I think 7- of- 8 on our third- down conversions to the end of the game, I believe it was something like that, it was really pretty strong. And a lot of it is his ability to hang in there and make plays and stay positive. Sterling Shepard, again, was exceptional. Just his competitiveness and ability to make big plays. Austin Seibert was incredible for a young guy. For an old guy, he was incredible. To average 4. 3. 4 yards a punt, there guy had about 8. Sterling averaged 1. That was really great for a freshman punter, and then to make all his kicks was really special, too. I thought Steven Parker had an exceptional game, as did Dom Alexander. Really everybody, the defense was incredible."On what an early- season win like this does for the psyche of a team: Stoops: "It can really boost you, this kind of game. Whether your psyche, your confidence, it reaffirms that you're always in the fight if you just keep playing. So hopefully it can give us a boost. I've got to again compliment Tennessee, coach [Butch] Jones, his staff have done a great job. And the environment was really, really fun to compete in. And not just cause we won. We all said it the day of the game, we said, 'Man, this is what you want.' I don't know why more teams don't play these kind of games. Our fans have been to Notre Dame and Florida State in the last few years, as well as their fans here. It's exciting, it's fun, it's what college football is about."On the biggest changes between last year and this year's defense: Stoops: "Maturity and experience on the field has led to far fewer mental breakdowns. We haven't changed defenses, it's just their execution of it is better and sharper. And it's probably fair to say even a little more physical in that they're a year older and another year in the weight room with all of them."On ESPN's Paul Finebaum saying OU football was irrelevant ahead of Tennessee: Stoops: "I don't care. He doesn't deserve that attention from me. The bottom line is, ask Tennessee and their 1. And he's getting paid to promote a league, I mean, that's what he does. And that's OK, everybody has to earn their money one way or another, so."On injury status of freshman RB Rodney Anderson: Stoops: "Rodney has a fracture in his non- weight- bearing bone, but needed an operation and was operated on Sunday morning. So he'll be redshirted and will be out the rest of the season."Watch the full press conference below, or click here. This Topic is Missing Your Voice.
